Another Virginia forest added to the Network

Had a great visit to Shenandoah National Park to dedicate the Whiteoak Canyon into the Old-Growth Forest Network. Madison County has something here to be proud of. The park people I worked with were all wonderful....so were the media folks, here is a link to a very nice article about the event:

Old growth survey available AND Nature writing residency

Old-growth forest in the Adirondacks
Old Growth in the East: A Survey is now available through the website of the Old-Growth Forest Network http://www.oldgrowthforest.net/#!books/c1dyj  (scroll to bottom of page). This survey was published by Mary Byrd Davis in 2003. It is the only document of its kind, detailing the remaining old-growth forests in the eastern United States. Davis passed away in 2011 and her family donated the rights of the survey to the Network. Her family has also created a Mary Byrd Davis Nature Writing Residency in the French Pyrenees. Applications are now being accepted through March 31st. Proposals are welcomed from published writers in any area of environmental literature. See http://bordeneuveretreat.com/amics/mary-byrd-davis-residency/ for more details.

Save Stadium Woods!

A great group of people are working hard to save Stadium Woods - an old-growth forest on the campus of Virginia Tech. Every forest would benefit from having such a dedicated group speaking out to protect it. Here is a link to a newspaper article about it if you want to know more. I am looking forward to visiting this forest on April 3 and sharing stories about the Old-Growth Forest Network at a talk that evening. Come join us if you can!
